One of my most rewarding roles as a musician is being an educator. I love to see students engaged in learning music, all the way from the fundamentals of a steady beat to the masterpieces of the flute repertoire. Preschoolers light up when it’s music time. Elementary and middle school students take pride in accomplishing their lesson assignments. High school students find much needed expression. Adults find peace in the solitude of practice – or excitement from a break in their routine.

I encourage students to develop creatively and to participate in performance or competitions at a level that is appropriate to their goals. In addition to teaching flute privately since 1997, I’ve also taught music appreciation at the college level and currently teach early childhood music and movement throughout the greater Raleigh area.

As much as I love to teach, I would never have taught had I not performed. I love creating a beautiful sound, so hours can pass unnoticed during practice.  Performing for a live audience, however, is where I feel most at home; it is where everything flows together with the least effort.  For that reason I remain an active freelance flutist for weddings, special events, recorded music, theater, and church services throughout North Carolina.
